Is It Worth Grading? Decision Checklist
Grading is an investment. Before dropping $20–$150+ per card, run through these signals to determine if your submission makes financial sense.
Green Light: Grade It
High Upside Candidate- Card is Near Mint or better — high likelihood of a 9 or 10 grade
- Raw value is $50+ — grading fee is a small percentage of total upside
- Card is a sought-after vintage or chase card (1st Edition, alternate art, key rookie)
- A PSA 9 or 10 sells for 3× or more raw price in eBay sold listings
Red Light: Skip It
High Financial Risk- Card is Lightly Played or worse — unlikely to hit a 9 regardless of agency
- Raw value under $20–$30 — submission fees will consume total card value
- Card is common bulk — high supply leads to low collector demand for graded copies
- You need liquidity within 2–3 months — standard grading tiers have long turnaround times
