Navigating Konami's Chain System

Yu-Gi-Oh! is famous for its complex interaction rules. At the core of high-level dueling is the Fast Effect Timing Chart and Chain Link Resolution System.

Understanding Spell Speeds

Every card effect in Yu-Gi-Oh! operates at a specific Spell Speed:

  • Spell Speed 1 (Slow): Normal Spells, Equip Spells, Ritual Spells, Field Spells, and Ignition/Trigger Monster Effects. Can only be activated during your Main Phase on an empty Chain.
  • Spell Speed 2 (Fast): Quick-Play Spells, Trap Cards, and Quick Effects. Can be chained in response to other effects during either player's turn.
  • Spell Speed 3 (Counter): Counter Traps (e.g., Solemn Judgment). Can respond to Spell Speed 1 or 2 effects. Only another Spell Speed 3 card can respond to a Spell Speed 3 activation!

How Chains Resolve: LIFO (Last In, First Out)

When players chain effects together:

  1. Chain Link 1 is activated (e.g., Normal Spell).
  2. Opponent responds with Chain Link 2 (e.g., Quick Effect).
  3. Player responds with Chain Link 3 (e.g., Counter Trap).

When neither player adds further effects, the Chain resolves in reverse order: Chain Link 3 resolves first $ ightarrow$ Chain Link 2 resolves second $ ightarrow$ Chain Link 1 resolves last.
