The Ultimate Pre-Grading Inspection Checklist: Lighting, Loupes, and Surface Scratches

Inspect raw cards at home using 5000K LED lighting and a 10x magnification loupe to catch micro-scratches and foil silvering before paying submission fees.

Why Home Pre-Inspection Saves Money

Grading agencies (PSA, BGS, CGC) charge submission fees regardless of whether your card receives a Gem Mint 10 or a disappointing 6. Performing a rigorous pre-grading inspection at home filters out flawed candidates before spending $20 to $50 per card in grading fees.

Essential Inspection Tools

  • 5000K Daylight LED Desk Lamp: Harsh, direct daylight spectrum light reveals surface scratches and foil clouding that warm indoor lighting hides.
  • 10x Magnification Jeweler's Loupe: Essential for checking corner sharp points and edge whitening.
  • Microfiber Cloth: Soft, clean cloth to gently wipe off fingerprints or dust specks before sleeving.
  • Centering Tool Card Ratio Overlay: Clear plastic grid line tool to measure border width ratios accurately.

Step-by-Step Pre-Inspection Protocol

1. Centering Verification (Front & Back)

Place your card flat under light and position the clear centering ratio tool over it. For a PSA 10, front centering must be approximately 55/45 to 60/40 or better. Back centering is more lenient (up to 75/25 for PSA 10).

2. Surface Glare Inspection

Hold the card at a 45-degree angle under direct LED light. Slowly tilt the card back and forth. Look for:

  • Foil print lines (factory roller marks).
  • Micro-scratches in the clear coat foil layer.
  • Fingerprint oils or binder page impression dimples.

3. Edge & Corner Review (Card Back)

Flip the card over and inspect the dark blue or black border back edges. Look for silvering (raw paper showing along trimmed edges) and micro-chipping at the four corners.
