Star Wars: Unlimited Ground & Space Arena Rules: Dual-Battle Strategy

Fantasy Flight's Star Wars: Unlimited splits combat between Ground and Space arenas. How to manage unit deployment and initiative across both battlefields.

Dual-Arena Combat Mechanics

Fantasy Flight Games' Star Wars: Unlimited introduces a dynamic combat mechanic by dividing every battlefield into two independent combat zones: the Ground Arena and the Space Arena.

How Split Arenas Work

When you play a unit card, its traits specify where it deploys:

  • Ground Units (Troopers, Vehicles, Heroes): Deploy to the Ground Arena. Ground units can only attack enemy Ground units or the enemy Base.
  • Space Units (Starfighters, Capital Ships): Deploy to the Space Arena. Space units can only attack enemy Space units or the enemy Base.

Strategic Implications of Dual Arenas

Because units cannot cross attack between arenas (a X-Wing in Space cannot attack a Stormtrooper on the Ground), players must balance unit deployment across both arenas.

If you abandon the Space Arena completely, your opponent can swing freely with Space units every turn directly at your Base!

The Initiative Action Mechanic

Star Wars: Unlimited does not use traditional long turns. Instead, players take single alternating actions (play a card, attack with 1 unit, or use an ability). One player can claim the Initiative Counter as their action, ending their turn early to guarantee going first in the next round.
