Protecting High-Value Collections Against Loss

As trading card collections grow to $5,000, $20,000, or $100,000+, protecting them against fire, flood, water damage, or theft becomes as important as protecting physical card condition.

The Homeowners Policy Trap

Many collectors assume their standard homeowners or renters insurance policy automatically covers their card binders. In reality, standard policies include strict sub-limits on collectibles and sports cards—often capping payout limits at $1,000 to $2,500 total regardless of your collection's actual value.

Furthermore, standard policies require high deductibles and often exclude accidental damage during travel or card shows.

Dedicated Collectibles Insurance Policies

Specialized insurance providers (such as Collect Insure, CIS, or Chubb) offer scheduled collectibles riders designed specifically for trading cards:

  • No Deductibles: Full replacement value payouts without paying out-of-pocket deductibles.
  • Transit & Show Coverage: Covers cards while traveling in your vehicle or displayed at convention tables.
  • Market Value Payouts: Pays current market value at the time of loss rather than original purchase price.

Documentation Requirements

To insure a high-end collection, insurers require documented inventory proof:

  1. High-resolution photos of front and back surfaces of key cards ($250+ value).
  2. Grading certificate numbers for all encapsulated slabs (PSA, BGS, CGC).
  3. An independent third-party market valuation report establishing total portfolio worth.

You can request an independent, confidential collection valuation report through our Collection Valuation Guide portal.
