Transitioning from kitchen table games or digital apps (like Pokémon TCG Live or MTG Arena) to playing in person at a Local Game Store (LGS) is a thrilling milestone. LGS weekly leagues are designed specifically to welcome new players into the physical community.
How Swiss Tournament Pairings Work
Most local store tournaments use the Swiss System pairing format rather than single elimination:
- No Early Knockouts: You play every round regardless of whether you win or lose.
- Fair Matchmaking: Round 1 pairings are random. In Round 2, winners play winners (1-0 vs 1-0) and players who lost play players who lost (0-1 vs 0-1). By Round 3, you are paired against opponents of equal skill.
Standard Match Timers & Structure
- Match Format: Best-of-3 games (or Best-of-1 for certain casual leagues).
- Time Limit: 45 to 50 minutes per round.
- Turns After Time: If time expires during a game, the active player completes turn 0, followed by 3 additional turns total before a draw is declared.
