Navigating the Convention Floor
Attending a commercial trading card show or convention is an unmatched experience for active collectors. Hundreds of dealer tables showcase thousands of slabs, vintage holos, and trade binders. However, floor etiquette directly influences whether vendors offer you friendly discounts or firm non-negotiable prices.
Rule 1: Always Ask Before Touching Binders or Display Cases
Never reach over a vendor's glass display case or pick up a trade binder without asking first. A simple "Mind if I look through this binder?" builds immediate rapport and demonstrates respect for their high-value inventory.
Rule 2: Master the Art of Bundle Offers
If you ask a vendor for a discount on a single $15 card, their margin is small. However, if you select 3 to 5 cards totaling $100, dealers are much more willing to offer a package deal (e.g., offering $85 cash for the $100 bundle).
Rule 3: Have Market Data Prepared, But Don't Argue
If a vendor has a card priced at $100 but recent TCGPlayer Market Price is $80, politely mention: "Recent TCGPlayer market comps show this around $80. Would you take $75 cash today?"
If the dealer declines, accept their decision politely and walk away. Vendors pay table fees ($300 to $1,500+ per show) and travel expenses, so their sticker prices reflect overhead.
Rule 4: Keep Personal Binders Secure
When carrying your own trade binders around a convention hall:
- Never leave your binder unattended on a crowded table.
- Keep your backpack zipped up and worn on your front in heavy crowds.
- Supervise anyone browsing your trade binder.
